Aristotle Views on Slavery

Aristotle Views on Slavery

Aristotle is regarded as father of political science, for  his empirical way of understanding and realist approach, rather than utopian Plato, his teacher.

Aristotle, define property as non-living like house, land etc and animate like Slaves, according to Aristotle, slaves are essential for survival of a fit system.

Aristotle, maintain that a slave is to be ruled full of despotism and should be exhausted for all manual works, to let his owner a more leisure time.

ARISTOTLE JUSTICATION OF SLAVERY BY SAYING IT NATURAL

1- First of all he regards slavery as NATURAL, according to him inferior bow down to superior, women to men, animal to men and in this same manner, slave is made to bow down to his owner.

2-  Nature had endowed, every man with different virtues and quality, some are dumb and fool, while some are far more incredible in quality of virtue, so by it Aristotle defend slavery.

3- Everything have a pre determined function to do, like eyes are to see not hear, in same manner the slave are here to serve his master or owner.

ARISTOTLE SAYS SLAVERY IS USEFUL

1- The master, get more time to participate and handle, other things in society and family, as he get more time due to help render by his slave, all manual works are done by him, and the master get time to render his time for the uplifting and welfare of the state.

2- The slavery is not contradictory but complimentary relationship between the slave and the master, the slave get time ad knowledge, by working with his more virtous owner or master, and it will lead to enlightenment of the slave.

EXPEDIENCE OF SLAVERY

1- In ancient and till medival time, the slavery was a well established and recognized institute in society, it was very common during that time, the slave was treated just as a mere commodity in markets, this impacted Aristotle, and he justified it.

2- At that time, the economy was very much based on these slaves, who were used for manufacturing and other works.

3- That time, slavery was kind of potent force  due to continuous wars, and from there the prisoners of war were made as slave.

ARISTOTLE, but gave some limitation to the criteria of slaves and guidelines, about way of treating them,

1- Distinction between slave by nature and by law, the fool and dumb people are to made slave, but he condemn the slavery for prisoner of war.

2- The master should use slave judiciously and with mercy, this essential in master slave relation, no harsh treatment with the slave.

3- The slave should be given chance to be emancipated, because if, a slave cultivate virtue than he should be made a freeman.

4- Greek cant be a slave, only barbarians of other land can be.

5- The children of slave can’t be declared as slave; if he has virtue and quality he can live as a free man.

These were limitation and criterion’s, propounded by Aristotle.

CRITICAL EVALUATION

1- Against the concept of equality.

2- It is not applicable or justifiable in modern time.

3- Teleogical conception, which mean Aristotle had biased views, according to him only Greeks are civilized, while remaining all other are barbarian.

4- Strong mind don’t mean, that person will have weak body, a stong body don’t means that he will have less potent brain or quality.
